What's going on?" I hear you cry!
"A concert review from a straight, 40 year old male who went to see Take That of his own free will (not dragged along by his girlfriend/wife)...that can't be right."
Well, 14 years ago, being a male fan used to have terrible consequences (but theres always been a few of us)...constant ribbing from friends, strange looks from people in the street when I proudly walked past with my tour T shirt on and even cheeky abuse from "real" female fans who thought I was obviously wearing the shirt as a joke. But no...I'm a genuine fan and always have been.
And tonight proved exactly why I'm a fan, why I'll always be a fan and why Take That have managed to bound back onto the scene with such an impact.
The show was of outstanding visual quality from the outset with a 3D animation intro comprising of a low flying zeppelin and a trip down the funnel of an old record player horn to start us off. The string quartet on the B stage set the standard for what we were about to receive.
Suddenly the lads were there on their political podiums, the crowd erupted and the roller-coaster was on its way with "Reach Out" being our first instalment. Tight vocals from the outset, now the show was really on its journey. This was followed by a nice solid version of "It only takes a minute" with the boys taking part in a very raunchy lap dance (this is what all you male unbelievers miss out on...they always have great sexy female dancers wearing next to nothing).
I think "Beautiful World" came next (wasn't keeping notes...too busy singing and dancing). Howard sang this very well considering his recent injury but he could have done with a bit of a facial trim as his stubble looked a bit over long and was almost a beard...Bless him.
"Patience" was next up (possibly), definitely a crowd pleaser this one, and rightly so, a classic track performed exceptionally well, showing that the vocal ability of the foursome is a force to be reckoned with. Gary had been shopping in Birmingham and bought himself a Mellotron (a small organ as he cheekily described it) which he was trying out tonight, it had a great warm 60's sound to it.
Mark did a great job of singing "Hold on" and thanked everyone for getting the album back into the top ten, 12 months after release, which got a huge cheer from the crowd.
Suddenly Lloyd Wade appeared on the B Stage and sang a spine tingling intro...It was time for the track I'd been waiting for...not my favourite TT track but certainly it has always been the most visual..."Relight My Fire". Again, I was not to be disappointed. Fire everywhere, including the boys actually being set alight (on purpose of course...scary) and Lloyd (it was his 40th birthday) broke into Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" in the middle section of the song...A classic move that bought a new edge to the track! The dancers on the B Stage were amazing.
"I'd wait for life" and the current single "Ruled the world" finished off this section of the show (This track has a 90's A-ha feel to it in my opinion, which is not a bad thing). Then the crowd went wild as a metal bridge lowered over the audience and the boys walked over to the central B Stage.
It was now time for some golden oldies and a bit of chat with the screaming fans. The Piano version of "Could It Be Magic" was heart warming and the crowd joined in with versions of "Do What You Like" (including the dance moves) and "Million Love Songs".
"Back For Good" is one of my favourite Take That tracks and was performed to perfection, again the vocals from all four lads cut the air in perfect harmony. They finished the B stage set with "Everything Changes", the little stage was alive with dancers and everyone partying around...what a great atmosphere...with four female dancers balancing high in the air scattering ticker-tape style confetti over everyone, how on earth they kept their balance as the whole lighting gantry tilted is a mystery to me. The only thing that was missing was a rendition of "Babe" by Mark...Where was it? Very disappointed...oh well you can't have all the tracks every year...maybe next time.
The guys made their way back to the main stage on foot through the audience which left them looking rather dishevelled, Mark of course came off worst with his clothes pulled in all directions and his hair all messed up...He looked like he'd certainly enjoyed himself anyway Smile
Gary, Mark and Howard disappeared back-stage leaving Jason to perform his rendition of "Wooden Boat". This track is an absolute classic and has a certain "Dylan" feel to its style. Jason thanked everyone for waiting 17 odd years for his first solo performance and it was well worth the wait. He sang it beautifully and received rapturous applause from the audience.
"Give Good Feeling" - Disco time at last with Matrix style backdrops and lasers. This new modern electronic dance version brings the track right up to date and the sound system suddenly came alive with pounding bass and sizzling effects. I had to laugh at Gary when I suddenly spotted him on stage in a "hoody" he looked a bit old for one really (Look who's talking...I'm certainly no spring chicken!) but it went well with the style of the track. There was some excellent break-dancing and cavorting around the stage and the whole audience had a real good dance and clap along, soaking up every second of the show. At one point Mark leant back into the crowd and was once again pulled apart by manic fans much to his delight (he seems to be enjoying this a little too often, he'll probably get withdrawal symptoms when the tour is over and start throwing himself into bus queues, and pensioners in his local post office won't stand a chance as he launches into them).
I think this is where they performed "Sure" but it's all a blur of exciting sound and vision and I'm not "SURE" where it actually came in the set. Never been over keen on this track but of course they performed it without a hitch in ultimate Take That style.
The visual effects on the final track "Never Forget" were nothing short of stunning, The guys interacted with a 3D image on a screen, moving both in and out of the animation. Again they showed their vocal abilities by singing perfectly in tune whilst running on a tread-mill, something I wouldn't have thought possible if I hadn't seen (and heard) it with my own eyes (and ears). I'd like to see all those X-Factor wannabees do that! Excellent performance and entertainment.
Of course it couldn't end here, we fans weren't letting them go home just yet and after a few minutes of chanting and stamping of feet they were back on stage.
The encore comprised of the closing bars of "Mr Blue Sky" by ELO followed by an inspiring rendition of "Shine". It was nice to see that the lads had acknowledged the roots and influences of the production of this track by their inclusion of the ELO reference, someone somewhere must be a bit of a fan:) . The stage had a glamorous 1930's -40's feel to it with a big RKO style transmitter animation in the background. Again a perfect crisp vocal performance by Mark, but I did keep expecting someone to walk across the stage with a Morrisons shopping trolley Smile
They finished on the immortal "Pray" again beautifully performed without flaw, all those cheesy old dance moves were there that we all know and love, it made me feel like I was back in the summer of 1993 when it was No 1 (ooh the bruises I used to get on my knees larking about in night clubs copying those "knee-drops")
And all too soon...the show was over...but what a show it had been, throughout the night the background animations and lighting effects had been second to none, the string quartet had added a classy edge to the overall sound, the musicians in the band had provided the guys with a musical backing to be proud of and the big side screens had given us intimate close ups of all those tiny little details.
Take That have proved once again that it's not just about tight trousers and screaming girls...It's also about performing great live music and putting on a professional entertaining show for one and all.
Well done lads...Thanks for a good night, good luck with the rest of the tour and I'm already getting my dialling finger ready for trying to get tickets for next year.
