They ruled my world!!!! It only takes a minute to fall in love - once again with Take That!
Back in the early 90s, I unfortunately never made it to one of their concerts - despite being a huge fan. So imagine my excitement when they announced they would be touring Germany this fall! Back in February, my best friend and I immediately bought tickets the day they went on sale.
Fast forward to yesterday evening: my best friend couldn't make it, and in the last minute my HUSBAND jumped in so I wouldn't have to go alone - though he is NOT a Take That fan. Add to this the fact that in the meantime I am 5 months pregnant with a quite noticeable baby bump, and you can imagine that this was not quite the way I imagined my very first Take That concert to be. To top it all off, the news that Howard - who along with Mark had always been my favorite member - was still not going to be able to join the others onstage really dampened my spirits.
But you know what? The boys were soooooooo fantastic that I lost any lingering feelings of frustration within the first few SECONDS. The minute they started their first song "Reach out" I immediately was swept away by their performance. They looked so good in their silver-grey suits that I found myself watching Gary and Jason just as avidly as my remaining favourite Mark. "It only takes a minute" brought out the sexy dancers, and my hubby actually grabbed for my binoculars and I think this was the moment he started to enjoy the show!
I was hoping that Howard would make an appearance, and he did - wearing a Frankfurt Eintracht jersey (Frankfurt's home soccer team) and carrying a Bembel (the traditional jug for apple wine, a local speciality). He looked GORGEOUS!!! He greeted the crowd in German, and said how frustrating it is for him to miss out on all the German concerts, especially as he considers Germany to be his second home! As in Berlin, he mentioned that his insurance would not allow him to perform - but that he was almost worried about the fact of how good of a job the other three are doing without him! . He then said that he loves Frankfurt Eintracht, and does not like Bayern Muenchen (who just had a big match last weekend were the underdog, Frankfurt actually managed to score a tie against the mighty goliath Bayern Munich). Howard then said he would now drink some more apple wine instead. With this he definitely won over my hubby (a Frankfurt Eintracht AND apple wine fan), who actually said too bad Howard won't be performing.
All in all the lads' interaction with the crowd was terrific - they spoke a lot to us, made me smile quite a bit, and really gave us the feeling that they were happy that we all came to see their show. And we proved that by acing their little test of our knowledge of their old songs!
My personal highlights with the most pleasurable goosebump moments? "Rule the world" with the fantastic light show (and Jason excellently filling in for Howard); "Could it be magic" in a mellow, melodic version, causing me to not miss Robbie as much as I thought I would; "Back for good" where the entire crowd sang at the top of their voices, word for word; and "Never forget" - though this was the moment I clearly missed Howard the most, the others did a terrific job of taking over for him, and all the arms in the air of the crowd proved that the feeling for this song was definitely there...
And my hubby? On our way to the concert he was clearly embarrassed to be seen going to a Take That concert. Even realizing that despite the clear majority of women in the crowd that there actually were some other men did not really help much. But at the end of the concert he said that while he would not go as far as to say that he is now a fan, he does have a lot of respect for some very talented men and he in fact did enjoy the show a lot. And you know what? I did catch him bopping along to some of the songs...
Come again soon boys!!!!!!!
