Zurich - what can I say...strange city, an airport like something from a sci-fi movie where everyone's been abducted, cows everywhere, even outside the city hotels - but the best night's entertainment put on by three amazing talents in the absence of their friend and band mate you could ever hope to find.
As the Reach Out podiums were put in place we were instantly aware of the fourth one, minus microphone, on the end. It was a poignant moment seeing the reality of the fact that a member of the band was missing. Nevertheless as the music started and Gary, Mark and Jason stood up on the podiums the crowd erupted into a deafening wall of sound. The three of them sang their hearts out and although we were very aware that Howard was missing, there was nothing missing from the performance in terms of sound and visual spectacle. The professionalism of the lads is unbeatable.
At the point of welcoming the fans, Mark said 'As you can see, we are only three' and the crowd chanted Howard's name, then as the video message from Howard was introduced you could hear the intake of breath as he was seen on the screen in his hospital bed. Bless him, despite looking and obviously feeling very unwell, he opened his message pretending to be on the phone to his Mum, saying 'It's OK Mum, I'm not dying...no...I'm not dying, it's alright really' Still displaying his sense of humour in those circumstances had some of the fans in tears. He apologised for not being there and joked that there would be no magic in the show as he was missing...well there was still magic, but he was really missed and we were all very aware of every part of the show that was different because he couldn't be there. Get well soon Howard!
The show is well known by now so suffice to say it was every bit as enjoyable and well executed as before. The absence of Beautiful World was sad, but the rest of the show was intact, despite a few necessary alterations. Patience, Hold On and I'd Wait for Life were beautiful despite the missing harmonies, the three lads seamlessly covered for the missing vocal in every song. Gary sang one of the best versions of I'd Wait for Life yet, adding some beautiful vocal ad libbing to the melody.
Howard's absence was understandably more obvious during It Only Takes a Minute when a female dancer took his place on the pole dance opposite Jason, but again, the sound and visual display was just as stunning and entertaining with the thumping disco beats and light show enhancing the sexy moves.
Rule The World has already become something of a show stopper, the lasers and lighting effects are breathtaking, creating an atmosphere more in keeping with the reality defying special effects of a top West End theatre show than a musical concert. The swirling mists and ethereal green lights and lasers are cut through by Gary's perfect clear vocal as the song opens and the lads walk to the front of the stage. The crowd go wild as they walk across the walkway to the B stage, their long coats and boots striding through the mist looking like something from Wuthering Heights.
The B stage set is beautiful, a perfect blend of simple, powerful vocals and stunning effects and lighting. Could it Be Magic, slowed down to its original best is a mesmerising piece. Gary's vocal and piano performance are superb, the song building to a spell binding climax with the dancers aloft on the red lit gantry showering the stage and crowd with iridescent confetti as the other dancers, band and Jason and Mark revolve around on the stage below.
Everything Changes should be a duet with Gary and Howard so Mark asked the crowd to sing along to help Gary as his dueting partner was missing this time. Not that Gary needed any help, the song swung along with all its usual vigour but the crowd rose to the occasion and joined in with gusto. Back for Good is always a highlight, every single person in the arena sings along, hands waving in the air in a huge display of community euphoria...just lovely.
Back on the Main stage Jason stood at the microphone preparing himself for his solo. He removed his boots and dropped them onto the floor below, and then removed his socks, the fans yelled to be thrown them, but he shook his head and said no.....nobody really wanted his smelly socks?but I think he might have been wrong on that count! He started Wooden Boat strongly, his confidence obviously building as the shows roll on, there was little evidence of nerves and he gave a beautiful performance that received a massive ovation. He apologised for being off pitch, but the crowd shouted that he wasn't, he humbly said 'I was, I could hear it in here' pointing to his ear piece, but he was too hard on himself, he sang the song beautifully and it sounded spot on.
Howard was certainly missed at the start of Give Good Feeling, the DJ opening was still there, but without Howard the relevance was lost, but the overall impact of one of the most energetic, heart pumping sections of the show wasn't diminished at all. Gary, Mark and Jason danced and sang up a storm with the crowd high on the buzz of it all. The crawl to the front of the stage was met with the usual screams and a growing wave of what can only be described as gratitude from the women!
Relight is by far one of the most enjoyable and spectacular parts of the show. It has always been a feast for the eyes and ears, but they really have excelled themselves this time, the voodoo drum beats and pulsating dance moves draw in the audience involving everyone in the sheer joy of the spectacle in front of them. The smooth transition into Lloyd Wade singing 'Crazy' is inspired as are the dance moves, with the lads and dancers silhouetted behind him, which are some of the best in the show. The pyrotechnics complete the electrifying feeling that fills the arena throughout this number. Just brilliant.
Never Forget was a deeply poignant moment as the screen filled with Howard's larger than life image walking towards us all, knowing that he wouldn't be stepping through the screen this time. The other three entered the stage on cue and Gary asked for everyone's help on this song because it was Howard's - making us all even more aware of his absence. Gary took the lead and sang it perfectly, as expected, particularly by those who remember him singing it on his solo tours in the late 90's. The treadmill action was altered slightly to cover the absence but was as clever and enjoyable as ever.
After rousing cheers and applause from the crowd they returned to the stage and gave a truly storming performance of Shine and the audience clearly loved every second. The glamour and glitter of the set is so right for the song, the entire arena comes alight with it.
Sadly all good things come to an end and it was moving again to see just the three of them standing in the opening stance for the last number, Pray. Their first number one sounded as good as ever and Gary seemed to be putting in an extra effort on the dance moves as he was in the central position of the three. This became especially apparent towards the end of the song when Mark was as usual heavily into the song, eyes shut, head back, foot gently stomping. The final set of dance moves began and as Gary and Jason got down on their knees Mark opened his eyes and realised he wasn't quite where he should be. Gary was laughing his head off while carrying on the moves with Jason smirking away on the end. Mark looked mortified, then laughed and stood back applauding Gary for actually getting it right while he had messed up. The crowd were in hysterics especially as when the singing began again Mark spoke over the lyrics saying 'Sorry Gaz' instead of singing. It was one of those priceless moments that only happen when someone messes up and it was wonderful, so thanks Mark for making the end of the show as memorable as the big production numbers!
They left the stage to massive applause and roars of approval. They have proved once again what sets them apart from other bands, sheer professionalism, unbreakable friendship that shines through everything they do, massive enthusiasm for the job of entertaining and a more than generous share of talent. Howard was missed greatly, but Gary, Mark and Jason did a fantastic job and not one person left that arena in Zurich feeling anything less than delighted, uplifted and grateful for the show they had put on
